Level 1 Te Reo Māori 

NZC Level 5-6 - Wana Ake!

In this unit, students will expand on their prior te reo Māori learning to broaden their kete kōrero, enabling them to discuss a range of events and situations. They will develop proficiency in using advanced sentence structures, enhancing their descriptive abilities with a focus on whakawhiti kōrero and forming and responding to questions. By the end of the unit, students will confidently discuss various events and express their feelings about their immediate world.

Students will deepen their knowledge of te reo Māori by engaging in diverse formal and informal contexts, adapting their language to communicate effectively in various situations.


Build Conversational Confidence:

This unit invites ākonga to explore and address key issues affecting rangatahi today, such as social media, alcohol, and vaping. Guided by the whakataukī "Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi", this unit emphasises the vital role of youth as leaders of change.

 

Ākonga will develop their te reo Māori skills while investigating the impacts of these challenges, proposing solutions, and reflecting on how core Māori values like whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and kaitiakitanga provide a framework for positive action.


Through discussions, research, and creative projects, students will enhance their language proficiency, build leadership skills, and embody the spirit of rangatahi as agents of meaningful change in their communities.

Anchored by the whakataukī "Mā pango, mā whero, ka oti ai te mahi", this unit highlights the importance of collaboration and shared commitment in achieving great outcomes.

Ākonga will investigate the lives of significant Māori leaders, analyse their qualities, and examine how they used collective effort to bring about change. They will develop their te reo Māori skills by describing leadership traits, narrating the actions of these leaders, and creating personal leadership plans. Through this journey, ākonga will reflect on how they can embody values such as manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, and rangatiratanga to lead and contribute positively to their schools and communities.

Students will explore the historical journey of te reo Māori, including its decline and revitalisation, and gain insight into its cultural and social importance.

This unit empowers learners to consider their roles in effecting positive change through leadership and advocacy, while building proficiency in te reo Māori.


Through the lens of Māori concepts such as kaitiakitanga (guardianship), rangatiratanga (leadership), and whanaungatanga (relationships), students will gain insights into sustainability issues, from climate change to environmental justice. By the end of this unit, ākonga will have the tools to confidently express ideas in te reo Māori and contribute meaningfully to their communities and beyond.
