Te Reo Māori Mini Units

For Years 3 -13

Our meticulously crafted 'mini-units' are an ideal fit for those taking their initial steps into the world of te reo Māori. They equip educators with the tools to orchestrate compelling lessons, employing a diverse array of activities that holistically address every facet of language acquisition — from reading (pānui) and writing (tuhituhi), to listening (whakarongo) and speaking (kōrero), and even visual comprehension (mātakitaki) and presentation (whakaatu).

The Ice Cream Shop

Turn your classroom into a vibrant, real-world language experience with our engaging and interactive Ice Cream Unit! Perfect for summer learning, this unit encourages students to use descriptive language and fun colloquialisms to interact with one another, as they practice ordering and preparing delicious ice creams—all in te reo Māori.

This unit is designed to captivate students with hands-on activities that focus on describing items, giving directions, and emphasising location, while building their confidence in speaking and listening skills. Through role-playing scenarios and collaborative tasks, students will learn to communicate effectively in te reo Māori, using basic sentence structures in an enjoyable and meaningful context.

​Kaiako can transform their classroom into a real-life Ice Cream Shop, where students will place, prepare, and receive their orders entirely in te reo Māori. This immersive activity not only reinforces their learning but creates a memorable experience that your students will love.

Iho Pūmanawa
Extraordinary people

This unit is designed to captivate students by using te reo Māori as a medium for self-expression and creativity, empowering them to describe themselves and important people in their lives. Through the exploration of descriptive language, students will learn to communicate about physical characteristics, personality traits, and emotions, while also discussing likes, dislikes, and origins in te reo Māori.

Students will build their confidence by weaving descriptive vocabulary, personal pronouns, and colloquialisms into engaging activities. The unit culminates in an exciting task where students will create a unique superhero character, showcasing their language skills through imaginative storytelling. This final project not only reinforces their learning but also provides an opportunity to apply te reo Māori in a fun, meaningful, and personalised context.

1.2 Introduce themselves and others, and respond to introductions.
1.6 Understand and use simple polite conventions, such as acknowledging people and expressing compliments.
2.3 Communicate about likes and dislikes, giving reasons where appropriate.

The end task challenges students to design and present their superhero character, incorporating the descriptive language and sentence structures they have mastered throughout the unit. Amazing Places!

Take your students on a linguistic adventure with this engaging and vibrant unit, designed to bring intermediate te reo Māori to life by focusing on fun and exciting places. Using the thrilling context of theme parks, students will be inspired to describe attractions, share their experiences, and express emotions in an informal and relatable way.

This unit emphasises the use of descriptive language and location-based vocabulary, allowing students to build their confidence while incorporating kīwaha to convey their excitement and emotions naturally. The creative focus on theme parks keeps students motivated and engaged as they practise communicating about places that spark joy and imagination.

To make learning te reo Māori even more dynamic, this unit includes interactive games, sound, and vibrant visuals, creating an immersive experience that students will love. The Wharekai

​This engaging unit brings te reo Māori to life by focusing on the language of food, dining, and real-world interactions. Students will use colloquial language to confidently communicate about cost, time, quality, and quantity, while expressing their preferences and opinions in te reo Māori.

What makes this unit extra special is its practical application—perfectly aligned with a visit to a local takeaway shop or ordering through Uber Eats! Students will have the chance to put their learning into action by ordering their kai in te reo Māori, creating a memorable and interactive experience that connects classroom learning to everyday life.

Through this unit, students will also develop conversational skills to express their desires, likes, and dislikes in a natural and engaging way. By blending practical language use with real-world scenarios, this unit makes learning te reo Māori relevant, enjoyable, and highly rewarding for students.
